Identifying the genetic basis of disease
نویسنده
چکیده
It is all in the DNA. Our genetic code, or genotype influences much about us. Not only are physical attributes (appearance, height, weight, eye color, hair color, etc.), all fair game for genetics, but also possibly more important things like our susceptibility to diseases, response to a certain drug, and so on. We refer to these ‘observable physico-chemical traits’ as phenotypes. Note that ‘to influence’ is not the same as ‘to determine’ other factors such as the environment one grows up in can play a role. The exact contribution of the genotype in determining a specific phenotype is a subject of much research. The best we can do today is to measure correlations between the two. Even this simpler problem has many challenges. But we are jumping ahead of ourselves. Let us review some biology.

I-34: NRY Haplotype Analysis: towards A Better Understanding of The Genetic Basis of Spermatogenic Failure
It has been established that the Y chromosome carries genes required for spermatogenesis and male fertility. For many decades worldwide screening for gene identification has been conducted in research laboratories. However, it has been a difficult process in identifying such genes (i.e. causative mutations) which could explain the phenotypic variation and could be potentially used as markers fo...

Background and purpose: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that is caused by hypersensitivity to environmental allergens. Symptoms of asthma include shortness of breath, airway hyper-responsiveness, wheezing, and cough. The disease might vary from a mild to severe and intermittent to chronic disease. Asthma is known as a multifactorial disease due to the interaction of gene...

This is a descriptive survey with goal of identifying the reasons of couples visiting the genetic centers in Tehrann (1994). The sample consisted of 150 couples randomly selected, in one of the mentioned Tehran genetic clinics. The tool was two part questionnaire. The first part provided information of personal characteristics of the subjects (18 questions) and the second including 20 que...
متن کاملIdentification of a Novel Intragenic Deletion of the PHKD1 Gene in a Patient with Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease
Background Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is caused by mutations in the PKHD1gene. In the present study, we describe a severe case of ARPKD carrying a point mutation and a novel four-exon deletion of PKHD1 gene. Materials and Methods The PKHD1, PKD1 and PKD2 ...
متن کاملIdentification of Alzheimer disease-relevant genes using a novel hybrid method
Identifying genes underlying complex diseases/traits that generally involve multiple etiological mechanisms and contributing genes is difficult. Although microarray technology has enabled researchers to investigate gene expression changes, but identifying pathobiologically relevant genes remains a challenge. To address this challenge, we apply a new method for selecting the disease-relevant gen...

Bacterial blight (Xanthomonas arboricola pv.juglandis) is one of the main diseases of walnut that reduce the yield in the central, western and northern regions of Iran. This disease was first reported form, Qazvin and Mazandaran, then widely reported from northern, central and western provinces. To identify the cause of the disease in different provinces, infected leaves collected from Alborze,...
